Pensacola Home & Garden magazine

As a freelance writer & photographer for the Pensacola News Journal, published by Gannett, I was responsible for articulating local stories in the health, food and home & garden sectors. I came up with story ideas according to recent trends, researched diet topics targeted to health conscious readers, shopped for food, prepared delicious feasts, styled and shot prepared foods and wrote about the health benefits of each. Topics were mainly focused on eating organic, local, whole, fresh and sustainable foods.

Digging for that perfect produce

For many local consumers, the secret to a great meal is produce from the area, preferably organic.

But to find this local, organic produce often requires a lot of digging of their own.

“A lot of people think local and organic are interchangeable. And sometimes they are, but not always. You have to ask lots of questions. If you’re driving down the road somewhere local and see a farmstand, that doesn’t always mean the food was grown here. You have to ask the farmer. Always ask questions,” says Pensacola organic gardener and owner of East Hill Edible Gardening Renee Perry.

“Many local growers do use organic methods but are not 'certified organic' because it’s very expensive to become certified,” Perry continues.
